People ask me why two policies that look almost identical on the brochure end up miles apart ten years in. The new LIFE Pod episode gets at the answer, and it comes down to three levers. Let's pull them apart slowly, because this is where the education actually pays off.
Lever one is time, and you can't make up for lost years by paying more later. Cash value in a well-built policy compounds on its guarantees, with dividends buying paid-up additions that themselves earn dividends. That curve is shallow early and steep late. So the years you own first aren't the exciting ones, but they're load-bearing. Skip them and the tall part of the curve never gets built.
Lever two is internal cost. Every permanent policy carries expenses inside it, and design decides how heavy they sit. A policy tilted toward paid-up additions instead of base premium generally puts more of your dollar to work as cash value early, and keeps that cash reachable when you need it. Same carrier, same insured, a different blueprint, and the growth curve moves.
Lever three is putting the same dollar to work twice. A dollar in a savings account does one job. A dollar of cash value keeps compounding inside the contract even while you borrow against it, because a policy loan comes from the insurer's money with your cash value as collateral. The dollar grows and works at the same time. That's the feature the whole idea rests on.
The fair objection, and the critics aren't wrong to raise it. Built the default way, these policies are slow and costly, and plenty of people have owned bad ones. The answer isn't to wave that off. It's to build the other way, on purpose. That's what design means here.
A word of caution: dividends aren't guaranteed, guaranteed values are the floor you should be willing to live with, and loans reduce your available cash value and death benefit until repaid. The mechanics are on the How It Grows page, the design piece is on why design decides everything, and the episode below covers all three keys in one sitting. When the education clicks and you want to see building, that's Build a Life LOC.
